No more generators for Railay

The delayed project to bring mains electricity to the Railay peninsula is now underway.
Due to happen last year, the project stalled due to wrangles over the route of the underwater cable, which will pass through National Park waters. A new route has now been surveyed, a 3.8km stretch from Ao Nam Mao beach to East Railay, and work is expected to start in the next few months.
The project will be handled by a contractor, Italian-Thai Development, and will cost approximately 76 million baht. Hotels on Railay beach have agreed to subsidise the cost of the cable by paying a higher price for consumption (approximately 5 baht per unit). This is still cheaper, and more environmentally friendly than the current set up, which is powered by noisy, dirty diesel generators.
